French Professor Acquitted And Released From Turkish Prison, Passport Still Not Restored

May 17, 2020

Professor Tuna Altinel from the University Lyon-1 in France was acquitted on appeal of all charges.  However, his freedom of travel has not been restored by the passport authorities on grounds that it must first be reviewed by the court.  Thus, he is unable to continue his employment until the court renders a decision.  CCS has written the court requesting that they expedite this matter and approve the reinstatement of Professor Altinel’s passport.

Your Honors,

The Committee of Concerned Scientists is an independent organization of scientists, physicians, engineers and scholars dedicated to protecting the human rights and scientific freedom of our colleagues around the world. We write to you concerning the case of Professor Tuna Altinel (University Lyon-1, France), now on appeal before your court.

We have followed and reported on this case since its inception more than one year ago, sending an observer to the three hearings of the trial held in Balikesir; at the third hearing Professor Altinel was acquitted on all charges. The prosecutor then filed the appeal presently before your tribunal, and pending its final resolution

Dr. Altınel’s freedom of travel has still not been restored by the passport authorities, apparently on the grounds that the decision is not final until reviewed by your court.  Thus, he is unable to carry out his professional duties in Lyon, France, where he is employed.

We would be grateful if you could inform us of the status and calendar for resolution of this matter, and we would urge you to bring the review process to a conclusion expeditiously.

Dr. Altinel is a respected, productive, and valued researcher and teacher, and an honor to his native country. We hope that he will shortly be able to exercise his right to travel freely, and to resume his professional activities. In these difficult times we believe that the social value of academic and scientific freedom is very clear.

Sincerely,

Sincerely,

Joel L. Lebowitz, Paul H. Plotz, Walter Reich, Eugene M. Chudnovsky, Alexander Greer
