Dr. Eugene Chudnovsky, Co-Chair of the Committee of Concerned Scientists, wrote an opinion piece for the Washington Examiner discussing the connection between China’s suppression of free speech and its failure to contain the coronavirus. He cites the example of Dr. Li Wenliang, who first spread warnings of the outbreak, and was subsequently warned by police that he had “seriously disrupt[ed] social order” by “making untrue statements on the internet”. He died at Wuhan Central Hospital on February 7, a victim of the virus.
Additional Note: On Tuesday, February 18, the Director of Wuhan Hospital, Liu Zhiming, also died of the virus.
