Dr. Darsi Ferrer and his wife, Yusnaymi Jorge Soca, were arrested in July, according to human rights advocates, the day before they planned to lead a demonstration in Havana. Dr. Ferrer is the Director of the Juan Bruno Zayas Center for Health and Human Rights in Havana. An Afro-Cuban medical professional, Dr. Ferrer established the center to offer medical attention to extremely poor Cubans who would not otherwise enjoy adequate medical care. As a human rights activist, he and his family have been harassed by government sponsored “repudiation squads,” which unleashes mob violence against non conformists.
CCS asked for the immediate release of Dr. Ferrer so that he can continue to pursue his humanitarian work as a medical professional for the benefit of your nation. We also urged he be protected from violence designed to punish him for expressing his opinions as a citizen.
