Islamic Republic of Iran

Dear President Pezeshkian,

The Committee of Concerned Scientists is an independent organization of scientists, physicians, engineers, and scholars devoted to the protection and advancement of human rights and scientific freedom for colleagues all over the world.

We are writing to you regarding Nobel laureate and prisoner Narges Mohammadi. Educated in physics and an engineer by trade, Dr. Mohammadi has been vocally supportive of the abolition of the death penalty. Since the late 1990s, she has faced imprisonment multiple times for her writing and peaceful advocacy on human rights issues, particularly her opposition to the death penalty. In addition to winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, she also received the 2018 Andrei Sakharov Prize by the American Physical Society, for her contributions to the defense of human rights.

Dr. Mohammadi suffers from a documented neurological disorder and other serious health conditions. Despite her known medical issues, credible sources state that in recent days Dr. Mohammadi has been beaten severely, requiring transport to emergency medical facilities multiple times. According to her family, during a brief phone call from the hospital, she confirmed that she had been subjected to repeated physical assault by authorities, including being hit multiple times.

The Committee is deeply concerned for Narges Mohammadi’s life and well-being. At the time of this writing, her whereabouts are unknown. We urgently request that Iranian authorities immediately cease all physical abuse of Dr. Mohammadi, as any further harm could result in permanent injury or death.

Sincerely,

Joel L. Lebowitz, Walter Reich, Eugene M. Chudnovsky, Alexander Greer
