Your Honor Tarek William Saab Halabi,
The Committee of Concerned Scientists is an independent organization of scientists, physicians, engineers, and scholars devoted to the protection and advancement of human rights and scientific freedom for colleagues all over the world.
We are writing regarding Rocío San Miguel, professor of law at the Central University of Venezuela and the Metropolitan University of Caracas. Professor San Miguel is known internationally for her human rights advocacy. It was reported that on February 9, 2024, she was arrested at the Maiquetía Simón Bolívar International Airport on unsubstantiated charges of conspiracy. Subsequently, her house in Caracas was raided by security agents who confiscated materials and maps she used in her lectures.
The arrest of Professor San Miguel has been criticized by governments and human rights organizations throughout the world. The Committee is concerned that she was accused of nonexistent crimes and imprisoned solely for her political activism. We urge you to release her immediately and unconditionally. We trust that your personal history of fighting for freedom of expression as a poet and writer will guide your decision in this case.
Thank you for your attention to this serious matter.
Sincerely,
