Peaceful Student Protests at the Palestinian Technical University, Kadoorie in Al Arroub, Violently Repressed by Israeli Military.

July 5, 2022

After a student from Kadoorie University was shot in the West Bank, a protest and a memorial were organized at the Al Arroub branch of Kadoorie University on March 6th and 9th. Both were violently repressed by the Israeli military, who used tear gas, rubber bullets and live rounds against the protesters.

Dear Prime Minister Lapid

The Committee of Concerned Scientists is an independent organization of scientists, physicians, engineers, and scholars devoted to the protection and advancement of human rights and scientific freedom for colleagues all over the world.

We are writing in regard to the recent operations by the Israeli military at the Al Arroub campus of the Palestine Technical University – Kadoorie.

On March 9, a memorial service for Abu Afifa was held at the Al Arroub campus of Kadoorie. The Israeli military intervened with violence and fired tear gas and rubber bullets onto the reportedly peaceful mourners. Three reported injuries from rubber bullets.

The right to peaceful protest is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 20) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (Part II Article 21), to which Israel is a party. We are concerned that the actions of the Israeli Military have infringed upon the rights of the students at Kadoorie. We further urge the government to open an inquiry into the matter and to take action to prevent such events from occurring in the future.

Sincerely,
signatures
