Serkan Golge, formerly a scientist at NASA, was arrested and held in Turkish prison for past three years, mostly in isolation. He was released on probation on May 29 following a conversation between the heads of Turkey and the United States. Golge noted that the detention has had a “devastating impact” on his family, has seriously hurt their financial situation, and his job was terminated. He always held that he was innocent of the charges against him. Golge was a Turkish citizen who became a citizen of the United States in 2010. Initially, Golge was sentenced to 7-1/2 years and accused of being part of the failed coup against Turkey in 2016. His sentence was then reduced to 5 years and recently he was released. Golge noted that he will fulfill his obligations for his probation, but will do whatever he has to do to clear his name.
