On March 19th a group of students opened a stand giving out Turkish delight (distributed to honor the soul of someone who has recently deceased). This was to honor 46 soldiers who lost their lives in Afrin. A second group of students (anti-war students) protested by opening a banner in opposition. A quarrel allegedly started between the two and it was reported that the students’ stand was attacked.
The Youth Branch of the AKP protested the attack on the stand and described the anti-war students as terrorists.
Security forces intervened and detained 12 anti-war students (seven of which have been released). Five students are still in detention. There is a “sealing order” in place and they cannot see an attorney for 24 hours. The students, in protest of the detentions, called for a rally on campus. Anti-Terror teams entered campus and detained seven students who were released.
