According to the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI), more than 40 Iranian university students were arrested in protests taking place in Iran between December 30, 2017 and January 4, 2018. It has been reported that most of the students detained are members of university trade unions or work for student publications.
Most of the students arrested did take part in the recent peaceful protests but were not part of organizing them. On January 1st, the University Trade Unions’ Council of Iran (UTUCI) held a meeting with the chancellor of the University of Tehran to determine how best to help the students and get them released. Four of the members of the Council were arrested when they left the meeting room. The remaining members decided not to leave the room.
