Board Member Zafra Lerman to Discuss Malta Conferences and Science Diplomacy

May 11, 2015

On May 19, Zafra Lerman, winner of the 2015 AAAS Prize for Science Diplomacy and a long time active board member of CCS, will discuss the work of the Malta Conferences (see below for details on how to participate). CCS has supported this unusual biennial event that brings together scientists from countries of the Middle East, including Iran, Iraq, Israel, Palestine and many others, who are able to discuss cross border issues such as water resources, science education, etc. in an atmosphere of peace and cooperation.

We include the speech at the AAAS meeting that recognized Lerman’s outstanding contributions to science and peace through these conferences.

Science Diplomacy in the Middle East: the Malta Conferences and their Lasting Impact

Tuesday, May 19 2015; 2:00-3:00 p.m. EDT

The latest iteration of the ACS Science and Human Rights webinar series will be a follow-up to our previous webinar on the Malta Conferences. This session will feature Dr. Zafra M. Lerman, President of the Malta Conferences Foundation, discussing how the meetings have helped to establish diplomatic ties in the Middle East and the importance of this meeting within the context of the current issues in the region. This year’s meeting will take place in Morocco in November.

Sponsors for previous Malta Conferences included American Chemical Society, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (Nobel Peace Prize 2013), UNESCO, Google, AAAS, and the American Physical Society.

Dr. Ann Nalley, a past President of the American Chemical Society, will serve as moderator.

The ACS Science and Human Rights webinar series is meant to inform the public on how to identify appropriate and practical solutions to human rights problems facing the scientific community. They demonstrate the applications of chemistry used to address global challenges such as access to safe water and sanitation. If you know of any human rights abuses toward scientists, please report to intlacts@acs.org.
