Professor Tohti Tunyaz: Welcomed the release from prison of Tohti Tunyaz, an Uighur historian and writer, but protested his inability to leave China to rejoin his family in Japan, under restrictions imposed by Chinese authorities. At the time of his arrest, Tohti was studying for a PhD in Uighur history and ethnic relations at Tokyo University, in Japan. Tohti was sentenced to 11 years in prison for “illegally acquiring state secrets” after receiving a copy of a list of documents relating to the second East Turkestan Independence Movement and pre-1949 Xinjiang history. He was also convicted of promoting “ethnic separateness” after allegedly publishing a book in Japan, although, acording to his Japanese supervisor, the book does not exist. Tohti was released from prison in February 2009, after serving an 11-year sentence.
