The Committee of Concerned Scientists sadly announces the passing of one of our National Sponsors and a Nobel Prize Laureate, Dr. Walter Kohn. Walter Kohn was not only a leading scientist, but also an advocate for the rights of scientists and the co-author of a documentary film on solar energy, The Power of the Sun.
Dr. Pierre Hohenberg, a current National Sponsor of CCS and a colleague of Dr. Kohn, noted that apart from the good fortune of collaborating with Walter on the origins of Density Functional Theory – the work that led to Walter’s Nobel prize – he personally benefited from Walter’s career advice, as well as his leadership as the founding director of the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Santa Barbara. In addition to his seminal contributions to physics, Walter was a shining example of humanity to several generations of students and scientific colleagues. We are very lucky to have had Dr. Kohn as an integral part of our organization and we will miss him.
