Dear President Raisi,
The Committee of Concerned Scientists is an independent organization of scientists, physicians, engineers, and scholars devoted to the protection and advancement of human rights and scientific freedom for colleagues all over the world.
We are writing in regard to Narges Mohammadi, a prominent physicist, engineer, and human rights activist, as well as the Vice President of the Defenders of Human Rights Center (DHRC) and the recipient of the 2018 Andrei Sakharov Human Rights Prize by the American Physical Society.
Ms. Mohammadi’s 2022 sentence was recently increased from eight years to a total of ten years and nine months in Evin Prison, in addition to 154 lashes.
The Committee is greatly concerned by this extreme action against her. The nonviolent nature of Ms. Mohammadi’s activities does not justify the treatment or punishments she has received in her sentencing and during her imprisonment.
We respectfully ask that Ms. Mohammadi be granted access to her family and her attorneys, that her case be reconsidered, and that she be released immediately and unconditionally.
Thank you for your attention to this serious matter. We will be closely following developments in this case.
Sincerely,
Joel L. Lebowitz, Paul H. Plotz, Walter Reich, Eugene M. Chudnovsky, Alexander Greer
