Dear President Lukashenko:
The Committee of Concerned Scientists is an independent organization of scientists, physicians, engineers and scholars devoted to the protection and advancement of human rights and scientific freedom for colleagues all over the world.
We write to express our concern over the recent charges of “violation of the procedure for organizing or holding mass events” against Dr. Alexander Tykun. He was sentenced to imprisonment for 12 days in an undisclosed location after a trial which neither his wife nor his lawyer were allowed to attend.
Dr. Tykun is a member of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of the Belarusian State University, where he also completed his doctorate. He is popular in Belarus for his participation in the KVN humor TV show and for writing scripts for various TV shows.
Dr. Tykun has been detained since October 4 after participating in a peaceful protest that day. We are concerned that he is facing charges just for expressing his views. Additionally, it was reported that Dr. Tykun was not allowed to use his medication for hypertension while in prison. His prosecution appears to be an example of a recurring pattern of charges leveled against academics without any legitimate explanation.
We write to urge you to ensure that Dr. Tykun is treated fairly, considering his health and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thank you for your attention to this serious matter. The Committee of Concerned Scientists will be closely following all developments in this case.
