It was just announced in The Brussels Times that the death sentence against Iranian-Swedish Professor Ahmadreza Djalali has been provisionally suspended while under review by the Iranian Supreme Court. A Supreme Court judge is scheduled to review his case next month.
Djalali’s attorney, Zeinab Taheri, noted that the file is currently under investigation by a deputy prosecutor and his assistant in charge of enforcing sentences. Both have voiced objections similar to those of Djalali.
The lawyer also noted that the medical staff at the prison have expressed concern about Djalali’s health and have recommended that he be seen in a community hospital. However, the judge in charge of the investigation, Judge Salavati, has repeatedly rejected such requests. There is some concern, due to the large amount of weight he has lost over a very short time, that a tumor may have developed.
