The Committee of Concerned Scientists is an independent organization of scientists, physicians, engineers and scholars devoted to the protection and advancement of human rights and scientific freedom for colleagues all over the world. We are joining numerous other human rights organizations to request that you join in interceding with Iran to plead for due process for Dr. Ahmadreza Djalali.
We wrote to you earlier this week but further details have come to our attention and we wanted to pass them on to you. Dr. Djalali is an Iranian-born scientist and current resident of Sweden who teaches Emergency and Disaster Medicine. He was invited to speak in Tehran by the University of Tehran. He had been to Iran on many occasions to teach such groups with no problems. However, on this occasion he was picked up by agents of the Ministry of Intelligence and taken to Evin Prison, where he was held in solitary confinement for seven months with no access to an attorney or his family and without being charged. Initially he was informed that a trial would be held shortly to address his situation. However, on December 25th he was informed that he was going to receive the maximum sentence without a trial (he was coerced to sign a confession but was not told what was in it). The maximum sentence was the death penalty. We understand through recent communications that he has been threatened with the death penalty and that now his case is being reviewed due to the numerous inquiries that have been received about this case.
Dr. Djalali has not had a trial nor proper representation. He continues to profess his innocence.
We are asking you to please intercede and assist Dr. Djalali to obtain due process, a fair trial and his release and safe return to his wife and two children.
Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
Sincerely,Joel L. Lebowitz, Paul H. Plotz, Walter Reich,
